Antebellum Athens
2 Day/1 Night Group Tour Itinerary
Day One
Morning: Your journey into Athens' past begins with a stroll through the North Campus of the University of Georgia, the first state-charted university in the United States. Greek Revival architecture highlights the original grounds. Make one of your stops the Founders Memorial Garden, commemorating the establishment of the first garden club in United States.
Lunch: Pick from over 50 eateries in Historic Downtown and take time to browse the shops as you walk off lunch.
Afternoon: Delve deeper into our Antebellum roots at the Federal-style Church-Waddel-Brumby House (ca. 1820), Athens' oldest surviving residence. You'll meet your step-on guide for the Museum Mile Tour of Historic House Museums with driving commentary and docent tours in each of the homes.
Evening: Refresh at your hotel and then get ready for some award-winning fare at Fresh Air BBQ, washed down with Southern sweet tea. An evening of entertainment awaits you with a Broadway show at The Classic Center or a concert at the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center.
Day Two
Morning: Whether you fancy gardens or galleries, you will have your pick between the State Botanical Garden of Georgia or the Georgia Museum of Art.
Lunch: On campus or at a country buffet before heading down the road.
Afternoon: Don't miss the arts community of Watkinsville on your way out of town and enjoy such historical treasures as the Eagle Tavern Museum (ca. 1801), a restored stagecoach inn and house museum.
