Measuring Deliberate Speed: Georgians Face School Desegregation September 28, 2009 to February 28, 2010 How did the Little Rock Crisis shape politics, policy, and public response to federal directives to desegregate? How have public schools changed since Little Rock? The Russell Library, a political archives at the University of Georgia, invites you to consider these questions through two new exhibits now on display: Measuring Deliberate Speed: Georgians Face School Desegregation and With All Deliberate Speed: The AP in Little Rock. Each Friday afternoon for the next five weeks, a short documentary film exploring school desegregation in the South will be screened, selected from the Peabody Awards Collection at the Walter J. Brown Media Archives. The screenings will take place from 12-1 p.m., beginning next Friday, January 22, 2010 and continuing through February 19, 2010.
Odum Exhibit January 4, 2010 to February 28, 2010 Sandy Creek Nature Center is presenting a special exhibit honoring the work of the late Dr. Eugene Odum known as the father of modern ecology. The exhibit is located in the ENSAT Building and continues through the winter. The exhibit features information regarding Dr. Odom, his life and career, and a special display highlighting ecological concepts.
Nurture: Video and Photography by Amy Jenkins January 9, 2010 to February 28, 2010 ATHICA is excited to bring northeast Georgia "Nurture:" Video and Photography by Amy Jenkins. The exhibit marks three firsts for ATHICA: it is the first focusing on the personal yet universal issues of parenting and breast-feeding, the first large-scale video-art exhibit, and the first full-run solo artist exhibition. The works, curated by ATHICA Artistic Director Lizzie Zucker Saltz, are from Jenkins' stunning "Cradle" series, in which the artist films herself and members of her family in order to reveal salient aspects of familial relationships.
Jamie Kirkell, Silk Artist January 16, 2010 to February 28, 2010 Flowers will fill the lobby of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia' Visitor's Center & Conservatory this winter. Traditional silk painting methods and modern design combine to create vivid, larger-than-life blooms that are at the same time delicate and bold.
Pop Culture Trivia Sundays January 31, 2010 to February 28, 2010 Trippin' through the 2000s: pop culture trivia; top three each week qualify for March 7 showdown at a shot at the $200 grand prize.
Melting Point: On Stage February 1-15 February 1, 2010 to February 15, 2010 The Melting Point is an intimate music venue on the grounds of Foundry Park Inn & Spa. It was named one of America's 40 Best Music Venues by Paste magazine.
Dine and Dance February 2, 2010 to February 23, 2010 Beginner dance lessons at 6 p.m., advanced lessons at 6:30 p.m.; open dance at 7 p.m.
African American Film Festival February 6, 2010 to February 20, 2010 Make it a blockbuster month with the African-American Film Festival as Lay Park celebrates Black History Month! Lay Park will host its fifth annual African-American Festival beginning Saturday, February 6 with the family oriented film "Ruby Bridges."
Pet CPR February 10, 2010 The program will cover medial and other emergencies that are common among pets and how to care for pets in these situations. This program is for ages 13 years and older. The program fee includes a First Aid manual and a take home DVD.
Cupid's Corner February 10, 2010 Participants ages 4-12 years will make gifts for their sweethearts and enjoy treats at this Valentine's program.
