Get a Taste of Athens at Mama’s Boy and Beyond
No one graduates without at least one (maybe one hundred) visits to this Athens brunch spot. With a homey feel and renowned Southern breakfast fare, the Mama’s Boy menu has a combination of classics and unique plates. Parents, this will be your go-to place for family weekend visits. Students, this is also the only place where it’s acceptable to have chocolate cake for breakfast. Other student faves include The Grit for the best vegan dishes around and Clocked! for those days when a dining hall burger just won’t cut it. Of course, there's no end to the delicious food options around town, so be sure to check out all the info on Athens eats.
Find your Perfect Coffee Shop
The gallons of coffee that students consume in the Classic City is infinite. Head over to the Jittery Joe’s downtown location across from North Campus to find your favorite blend or treat yourself to coffee and donuts at Zombie. Venture further into downtown to check out 1000 Faces or the Hendershot’s patio for other great options. Between 8 a.m. classes and late-night study sessions, you’ll quickly learn why finding your favorite caffeine fix is a must-do in Athens.
Check Out Downtown Shopping
While you’re exploring downtown Athens, definitely take some time to shop around for some Bulldawg gear! The Clubhouse carries all things UGA and The Red Zone has all the red and black you need for game day. Dynamite Vintage always has great vintage UGA gear as well as hard to find pieces. Also, be sure to stop by Agora and Atomic Athens for some of the best thrifting of your life.
Experience an Athens Tradition
Live shows are a rite of passage in the Classic City, and there’s something for everyone. The B-52s and R.E.M. put Athens on the map, but Athens is home to hundreds of bands of many different genres. You’re bound to find bands you know and love at the Georgia Theatre or the 40 Watt, and you can let Live Wire or Caledonia introduce you to someone new. Attending weeknight shows is a popular way to take a break from studying and enjoy the city. Be sure to make your way to one of these venues as soon as you can! Before long, you’ll be a certified Athens music scene expert.
