Love spring? We do too! And, to show how much we adore this great weather, Athens has plenty of festivals on our spring calendar. From events for craft beer enthusiasts and comic book fans, to one of America's top professional cycling races, there is a festival for every type of visitor. Talk about the perfect opportunity to plan a quick Athens, Georgia getaway!
March 20 - 22, 2016: First up on the list is the Jewish Film Festival. If films that celebrate Jewish culture pique your interest, this would be the perfect event for you! The festival will kick off on March 19 with an opening gala at the Georgia Museum of Art. The following festivities, like a discussion with filmmakers and a short filmmaking competition, will take place at Cine in downtown Athens. You will also have an opportunity to savor local Athens bites. Yum!
March 31 - April 2, 2016: At the end of March, dance on over to the Slingshot Athens Music & Arts Festival that is set to take over more than five city blocks and dozens of venues. This festival brings loads of creative expression together in one place. Expect to see local, national and international artists in music, comedy, electronic art and film.
April 9, 2016: Saturday, April 9 is sure to please because we have two events on the same day! College Square will entertain thousands of visitors at the UGA International Street Festival. Boasting a yearly attendance of 3,000 - 5,000 and dozens of UGA international student and community organizations sponsoring the event, this festival has been an Athens favorite for more than 30 years.
Athens will also host Plantapalooza! on April 9. Participants will find a vast assortment of plants, including both local favorites and difficult-to-find plants at The State Botanical Garden, The Trial Gardens at UGA, and the UGA Horticulture Club.
April 10, 2016: After attending a festival on April 9, stay the night because the 21st Annual Classic City Brew Fest will take place the next day. You can sip a few or an estimated 350 rare, regional and world craft beers! Attendees can also take a Terrapin Beer Co. tour and partake in countless restaurant tastings, all while enjoying live music in good company. If this doesn’t make you save the date, having a hand in a good cause might! All proceeds from the event will benefit the Athens-Area Humane Society, which is just doggone exciting!
April 16, 2016: The 23rd Annual Piedmont Gardeners Tour features access to five local, private gardens and is the perfect way to get outdoors for beauty and inspiration. The event will be hosted rain or shine and all proceeds go towards a scholarship fund for UGA students studying horticulture or other related fields.
April 23, 2016: The 40 Watt Club will host the 15th Annual FLUKE Mini-Comics Festival for comic book lovers. FLUKE prides itself on not being the standard, large comic convention and merchandising event, but rather an intimate venue for the discussion and exchange of mini-comic, magazine and independent publishing information.
April 30 - May 1, 2016: For 38 years, the Athens Human Rights Festival has brought speakers from local, national and global organizations together at downtown’s College Square to discuss popular issues and will do so again! The weekend will feature live music, informational booths and youth performances.
May 6 -7, 2016: The Twilight Criterium, now in its 37th year, has grown to 150 eager cyclists and is a top stop on the national cycling tour circuit! As a fan favorite for its unique format in downtown Athens, large, energetic crowds are sure to gather. Not only will bikers be able to test their stamina and find the challenge they seek, but various races and kid-friendly events will keep supporters, families and racers entertained. Twilight has also added another cool component to take place the afternoon before the main race - the 1st annual Apps & Taps Craft Beer Invitational. Check it out!
