The Georgia Club and The Classic Center Cultural Foundation are cosponsors proud to introduce the works of award-winning William Kwamena-Poh to Athens area residents. The art will be on display Friday November 4 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday November 5 from 11:00 – 3:00 pm. at The Georgia Club’s Village Hall, 1050 Chancellors Drive, Statham, Georgia.

Kwamena-Poh’s home and studio are in Savannah, though his work can be found across the country in art galleries, private homes and corporate offices. He was featured in the February 2016 issue of Forbes magazine as one of twelve contemporary artists from Jackson Hole to Madrid worth watching (http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonborbet/2016/02/03/price-ranges-and-studio-images-of-12-contemporary-artists/#1050768d5185). Some well-known private collectors include actor, director and producer Forest Whitaker as well as actress and director Angela Bassett.

Kwamena-Poh was born in Ghana in West Africa, and still visits there regularly. Ghana inspires much of his art, particularly the fishing scenes, markets, and people. He paints with gouache, also known as opaque watercolor, which has a brilliant and colorful light-reflecting quality. His introduction to the U.S. came when his father, a Ghanaian history professor, came as a Fulbright Scholar to teach at Talladega College in Alabama, bringing his family with him. William enrolled in Talladega College at the same time and earned a degree in Sociology. He now exhibits at his own studio, Osibisa Fine Arts in Savannah’s City Market, (www.facebook.com/osibisafineart) as well as participating in numerous art festivals and solo exhibitions across the country.

The November exhibit is free and open to the public. There will be refreshments and a cash bar, as well as raffle tickets for sale for some valuable prizes. All revenues generated by the raffle sales will be donated to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. Prizes have been donated by the sponsors and include:

  • A foursome for golf, dinner and overnight accommodations at the Georgia Club’s private guest suite.
  • A six-person private box at The Classic Center Theatre for the live performance of Elf, the Broadway Musical, on December 13, 2016.
