“Clarinetist Anthony McGill was masterful throughout the performance…McGill has a silken tone, but he possesses the admirable ability to vary it.”—San Diego Union-Tribune
“One of the great nice guys in music, Ax is a pianist who, over his five-decade career, seems to have made no enemies while sitting quietly, comfortably near the top of his field.”—New York Times
Emanuel Ax is a legendary pianist who has captivated audiences around the world with his solo recitals, chamber music collaborations, and orchestral performances, including our hometown Atlanta Symphony. He “is an extremely satisfying pianist; he is at home in a wide variety of music and his pianism is always thoughtful, lyrical, lustrous” (Washington Post).
Hailed for his “trademark brilliance, penetrating sound and rich character” (New York Times), clarinetist Anthony McGill is one of classical music’s most recognizable and brilliantly multifaceted figures. In addition to his dynamic international solo and chamber music career, McGill is principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic—the first Black principal player in the organization’s history.
The two musicians return to Athens—together for the first time—for a collaborative performance featuring music by Schubert, Florence Price, James Lee III, Adolphus Hailstork, and Leonard Bernstein.
Program
JAMES LEE III: Joyous Advocate
SCHUBERT: Sonata in A Minor, D. 821, “Arpeggione”
FLORENCE PRICE: Adoration
JESSIE MONTGOMERY: Peace
ADOLPHUS HAILSTORK: The Blue Bag
