The work in Schram’s exhibition primarily incorporates post-consumer materials rather than raw, new resources. He views these used materials as having reached the end of their human-intended functional life. When such materials cross his path—just before they might be discarded into a landfill—he collects them. This approach requires both innovation and strategic planning due to the unpredictability and scarcity of available materials. Schram is committed to using only the quantities that happen to come into his life by chance.
This practice has sparked an ongoing interest in the history and multiple lives of materials, most recently leading to a deeper examination of societal consumption and waste. His work explores the industrial processes that transform natural resources into modern consumables and questions the prevailing perception that these items carry little to no cost.
