Grounded in the landscapes and traditions of the American South, Jean Gray Mohs’ work explores the interplay between resilience and fragility, shaped by her experiences with chronic illness and organ transplantation. As both artist and mother, she reflects on themes of survival, care, and connection through materials that mirror the body’s vulnerability.
Her practice treats the body as both structure and sanctuary—distilling its forms into minimal, abstract shapes. Using sewn, bound, and carved elements, she creates organic wooden objects that evoke memory, honor physicality, and foster a sense of kinship.
