(ATHENS) The GlassCube, located on the corner of Hotel Indigo-Athens property, is Athens only art exhibition gallery viewable 24 hours, 7 days a week from the street, in your car, riding by on your bike or strolling along the sidewalk. This installation space features a commissioned site-specific work every 6 months, and is accompanied by a residency honorarium.
Keepin it Classic, the new installation by Taylor Shaw, acts as a roadside attraction, drawing the viewer in with bright 90’s colors and nostalgic imagery much the same way a Florida orange stand would. The imagery found within the letters pays homage to things quintessentially “Athens”. Keepin it Classic, shows Shaw’s love for tourist-based coastal imagery as well as for the Athens culture and local businesses. With spring and summer break upon us, this work seeks to bring the mind to the sound of crashing waves and seagulls screeching overhead while physically residing in the Classic City. Shaw says, “In my mind I’m always near the water. Vacation Forever.”
Taylor Shaw, aka LazerChef, is the FloridaMan. Shaw’s work can be described as a hybrid of a roadside attraction, a tacky postcard, and a bait-house sign painting. Relying heavily on the colors, imagery, and je ne sais quoi of Florida’s phenomenal weirdness allows Shaw to explore local landscapes from a different frame of reference. What if everywhere was on the coast and what if every week was Spring Break?
Honing his skill set, painting condos, cooking seafood, and working on the bait boats helped shape interests as his art practice continues to evolve. Currently finishing up his MFA at the University of Georgia, Shaw will be heading back down to the coast to continue his research as an artist and teacher.
