Linnentown – The Musical is a groundbreaking tribute to Athens' history written by resident and author Hattie Thomas Whitehead. The musical, returning to The Classic Center Theatre stage for the second time, depicts the historically significant African American community of Linnentown in Athens, Georgia, that was removed in the 1960s as part of an urban renewal project.
Proceeds from Linnentown- The Musical will help support Athens-Clarke County Center for Racial Justice and Black Futures, the city’s first African American history center. Scheduled to open on The Classic Center campus in 2026, The Center will preserve and honor the stories of Linnentown and other aspects of local history.
