"To love and be loved. What could be more important?" asks Richard Chaney, director of A. R. Gurney's Love Letters, opening at Athens' Town & Gown Players in March. The play follows Melissa Gardner (Gay McCommons) & Andrew Makepeace Ladd III (David Swisher) through nearly 50 years of correspondence as it charts their up-and-down relationship. "The play is poignant and funny and universal in its themes," further observes Chaney.
Playwright Gurney, who died in 2017, was best known for his witty studies of upper-class WASP life in contemporary America (The Cocktail Hour, The Dining Room, Sylvia) and Love Letters is no exception. It was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 1990. The popular, two-character play is frequently produced and is known for its simple staging. Over the last 30 years, its diverse pairs of actors have included Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson, Ali MacGraw & Ryan O'Neal, Katharine Ross & Sam Elliott, Jeff Daniels & Sigourney Weaver, Robert Wagner & Stefanie Powers and Larry Hagman & Barbara Eden.
