After years of silence, Murray Attaway has resurfaced with a new album, Tense Music Plays out May 9th. Murray was the frontman and songwriter for legendary indie rockers, Guadalcanal Diary. He'll perform at The Foundry on May 16th.
Hailing from Athens, GA, Guadalcanal Diary was formed by Murray Attaway and Jeff Walls in 1981. They were signed by Elektra Records - the outcome was four classic albums; Don Dixon produced Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man (1984), 2x4 (1986), and Flip-Flop (1989,) while Rodney Mills produced Jamboree (1985.)
Rolling Stone described Guadalcanal Diary as a "great second-generation Athens band" with a "searching earnestness" typical such as fellow hometown heroes REM. Trouser Press opined, "Guadalcanal Diary distinguished itself from any smart, tuneful American guitar combos by combining accessible songcraft with provocatively twisted lyrics. Singer/guitarist Murray Attaway's songs reflect a bizarre variety of far-flung interests, from a preoccupation with the supernatural to a fascination with American cultural imperialism; the band delivers them all with rootsy irony. “
For his first solo album in three decades, Tense Music Plays, Attaway teamed up with veteran engineer and sometimes producer Mark Williams (Southern Culture on the Skids, Joe Walsh, Pat DiNizio, Tammy Faye Bakker.) Tense Music Plays wanders through Murray Attaway's unique landscape, always staying close to the styles he's known for but creating a few new ones along the way.
