A major trend that spanned art and literature in the 20th century, “magic realism” is a term that embraces contradiction: reality and unreality, the commonplace and the spectacular, the ordinary and the extraordinary. It is also a global phenomenon, encompassing painting in the United States, modern film, the writings of Gabriel García Márquez and more. In this panel discussion, faculty from UGA and Clark Atlanta University will discuss magic realism against the backdrop of selected objects from the exhibition “Extra Ordinary: Magic, Mystery, and Imagination in American Realism.” The panel will begin with a brief introduction to the exhibition and will be moderated by the exhibition’s curator, Jeffrey Richmond-Moll, curator of American art at the museum. Panelists include: Nora Benedict, assistant professor of Spanish and digital humanities, UGA; Nell Andrew, associate professor of art history, UGA; and Maurita Poole, director and curator at Clark Atlanta University Art Museum.
