Discover the lives and legacy of the leaders of the Confederacy, many of whom have ties to the Athens area, on this regional self-guided heritage trail. Two-dozen of the trail's 45 sites are in Athens, or take a day trip during your Athens visit to other sites. The Civil War Heartland Leaders Trails combines both the drama of Civil War battle and the real lives of the leaders and common people who lived during this turbulent period of our nation's history. With the exception of Virginia, no state witnessed more military action than Georgia. Follow the Stoneman's Raid Trail and relive this exiting "cat-and-mouse" tale that culminated in a stunning capture of federal troops that were paraded on the University of Georgia campus.
Maps are available at the Athens Welcome Center, or download from the trail's website.
Students at UGA's New Media Institute developed an online guide and mobile app for smartphones of many of the Athens Civil War sites, which can be accessed here.
