Classic City Tours is Athens’ premier tour and shuttle service, owned and operated by the organization that
saved Athens’ tangible history – The Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation.

Classic City Tours researches and builds its tours creatively, ensuring they are both entertaining and educational, authentic and experiential. Your tour guide will  share esoteric oddities and amazing stories on many subjects – history, architecture, the Civil War, art, music, African-American studies, and more. Expert guides know exactly what to do in Athens, on any given day, that give visitors a taste of Athens as the locals experience it.

  • ATHENS HERITAGE TOUR:  
    Overview of magnificent Antebellum homes and historic neighborhoods of widely varying architectural styles, eclectic Downtown Athens, the University of Georgia campus, the world's only "tree that owns itself" and Double-Barreled Cannon.  
    90 minutes
     
  • MUSEUM MILE TOUR:
    Experience 100 years of gracious Southern architecture and interiors through a guided tour of Athens' Antebellum museum homes, including Federal, Greek Revival, and High Victorian periods.
    1 3/4 hours to 3 hours based on selection of tour stops
     
  • MEMORIES OF THE ATHENS AMERICAN EXPERIENCE TOUR:
    Native Athenian Mrs. Rosa Thurmond shares heartfelt stories about community spirit and the teachers and leaders who anchored neighborhoods and shaped the Athens we know today. Stops may include Rittenbury Sculpture Yard, First A.M.E. Church, Morton Theatre, Gospel Pilgrim Cemetery.  
    Add a soul food lunch to complete the experience!
    2 1/2 hours tour only; 3 1/4 hours with lunch
     
  • FOLKLORE, FACTS, AND FABLES TOUR:
    This downtown walking tour reveals the back-stories of Athens' better known landmarks and little known oddities of its people and places. Tour guides' real-life personalities shape the tour, from a tenacious detective of Athens' unknown histories, to a"misguided" Second City stand-up comedian, to one with a hankering for Athens' ghostly saints.

  • MUSIC HISTORY TOUR:
    Discover how the art and music scenes fused and fertilized the birth of new wave music. This combination walking and bus tour includes Downtown Athens, the Morton Theatre, R.E.M. Steeple and Trestle. 
    Add lunch at Weaver D's Fine Foods, always "Automatic for the People!"

  • ATHENS ART SAMPLER TOUR:
    Be inspired with a visit to one of Athens' local museums and galleries or the state's official art museum, the Georgia Museum of Art. Tour the space, and then enter the studio to create a masterpiece of your own, from painting to print-making, jewelry or pottery.
    30-45 minutes guided museum/gallery tour, add time for studio art creation
     
  • OLD SOUTH SUPPER CLUB TOUR: (in development)
    Dine at a beautiful Antebellum museum home, complete with a delicious period dinner appropriate to the setting and a guided interior tour. Learn about heritage foodways and what was locally available in Old Athens.

  • ATHENS HISTORY & HAUNTINGS TOUR:
    Uncover ghost stories, spooks, specters, and other oddities of UGA and the Classic City. This popular walking tour ends at Creature Comforts brewery for a tasting and brewery tour.

  • HOLIDAY SPIRITS MUSEUM MILE TOUR: (seasonal)
    This award-winning special holiday version of the Museum Mile tour transports guests to Christmases past focuses on Southern holiday traditions and decor spanning the 19th Century.

All tours are subject to availability with advance reservations and a minimum number of attendees required. Tours typically depart from the Athens Welcome Center unless other arrangements are made.
