Forget Savannah, Macon, Knoxville...finally, you don't have to leave town to see (or take part in) a chalk-painting festival!

The Athens Area Arts Council is partnering with the Classic Center and Colors of Connection to bring us the first-ever Classic City Chalk Fest. This is a two-day event, which kicks off Saturday, May 16 when professional artists show off their pastel skills on the parking lot at Creature Comforts Brewery. (Spaces for artists are still available - you will be compensated for this event! Please contact AAAC for details.) Then, head across the street for a 5 p.m. screening of a documentary about Colors of Connection, which uses art to help heal war-torn communities around the world.

Then, the drawing for the masses kicks off on Sunday, May 17! You can reserve your 10-by-10-foot space for $20; this will include a box of artist-quality pastels and a primed space off Foundry Street during the Sunday Center Market grand opening celebration. Come draw from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., compete for a prize and take in the carnival-like atmosphere during the celebration.

Help spread the word and gather a few friends to help with a drawing. Let's make the first chalk festival as big as possible for our first year!

Visit the Classic City Chalk Fest website for event rules and to sign up.
