Historic Athens announces its fall 2021 Athens Heritage Walks series. The historic walking tours, now in their 12th season, are a series of guided tours highlighting Athens’ historic neighborhoods and places. The walks began in 2009 to celebrate Athens’ designation as one of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations and have been held annually since that time, with the exception of 2020, due to the pandemic.
There are nine walking tours in this year’s series. All the tours are new with the exception of two returning favorites—Mill Village in the Boulevard Historic District and the Oconee Hill Cemetery National Register District. Four of this year’s tours feature Athens’ African American history—three historic neighborhoods will be explored, and a tour of University of Georgia’s North Campus will tell the stories of the enslaved people who built and maintained the university. Also new this year is “Queer Space,” a walking tour of LGBTQ history in Athens.
Tour guides are local volunteers with a love for Athens and a special place in their hearts for the places they take you. Each guide is familiar with neighborhood architectural styles, historical context and interesting characters who once lived there—and in some cases still do. This expertise creates a unique experience for each tour.
This year’s series features nine tours, starting on September 12 and ending on November 14.
