Social distancing in Athens, Georgia, has meant that the famous music scene and legendary nightclubs have temporarily gone dark. Gigs and concerts are how our musicians earn their living, and we'd like to #SupportAthensOwn and bring attention to several ways you can help support local musicians during these times.

We're keeping this article updated, so TELL US if you have other tips and ideas!

Listen Up

We need music now more than ever, and Athens musicians are stepping up to bring some live music into our homes. Just one example is Randall Bramblett. Tune in to https://www.facebook.com/RandallBramblett/ on Tues. April 7th at 8 p.m. If you want to leave a tip (hint hint!) that link is https://www.paypal.me/RandallBramblett.

Buy Merchandise

Athens Music History Tour Wuxtry Records

Buying a shirt, hat or other merch from your favorite Athens musician or venue makes you feel good while you're looking cool. These sales put money directly in the pockets of artists. Head to individual artist websites to check out what swag they are selling.

Buy Music and Support Local Record Stores

Let's face it-- we all need some distraction and some cheering up while we're hunkered down at home. Go online to buy an album or download some fresh Athens tunes, or some old favorites. Local Athens record stores such as Wuxtry and Low Yo Yo Stuff are a vital part of the local music scene and also need your support.

Donate Concert Ticket Refunds

DTN - HI - Graduate Athens - Concert CalendarSome of the most disappointing parts of social distancing and sheltering in place have been the notices of concert postponements or cancellations. While a disappointment for those with tickets, these events that are not happening have a tough economic impact on the music venues, their staffs, booking agents, promoters and everyone along the music industry chain. In support of the local music industry, consider forgoing asking for a refund for tickets to ensure that Athens music venues can keep paying their rent and utilities during the shutdown.

Crowd Funding

Look for GoFundMe campaigns for your favorite Athens music venue, to help ensure they'll be around to entertain you when this is all over:

Support Athens Own

We encourage you to look for ways to #SupportAthensOwn on social, including our new Facebook Group. We'll be posting updates there (live streaming, anyone?) and look forward to hearing live music playing again throughout Athens!
