It's time for the 9th annual Athens MLK Day Parade! Sponsored by Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement, Athens Downtown Development Authority, and United Group of Artists ENT. Festivities start at 12:00 pm on the corner of Hull and Washington Street with live performances. Parade begins at 3:00 pm.
Throughout his life, Dr. King struggled with depression especially towards the end of his life as he faced opposition to the War, Poverty, and addressing income inequality. Many biographers note that he faced alienation from longtime supporters as he took on this challenge. What is remarkable in looking at Dr. King’s life is that he was able to embrace his own personal mental health challenges and understand that they were interwoven with the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. King was explicit in a sermon on this topic saying “Everybody passionately seeks to be well adjusted…but there are some things in our world to which men of goodwill must be maladjusted…Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.” His life and work inspire us to face inequality alongside our personal struggles. Parade participants check in at 2:00 pm at the corner of Hull Street and Hancock Ave in Downtown Athens. Parade participants are encouraged to create signage promoting a positive cause or message.
An honoree ceremony will be held following the parade.
