Summer was made for outdoor concerts – and so were the amphitheater and terraced lawns in the Flower Garden of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia at the University of Georgia. Now in its 16th season, the Sunflower Music Series has placed both world-renowned and new-on-the-scene musicians in a world-class botanical environment.

June

Caroline Aiken will perform at June’s Sunflower Music Series. Caroline Aiken’s rich history includes recording and performing with Bonnie Raitt and the Indigo Girls, opening for Arlo Guthrie, Muddy Waters, Doc Watson, Randy Newman, Little Feat, 38 Special, Beach Boys, Janis Ian, Richie Havens. Caroline appears in regional and national festivals, radio shows, workshops and concert series, supporting 9 nationally acclaimed recordings.

July

Originally formed in 1993, String Theory plays old time, bluegrass and Americana music. While the lineup has evolved and changed throughout its history, the band has consistently been made up of some of Athens’ finest acoustic musicians.

August

Atlanta-based band The Whiskey Gentry just released their third full-length studio album entitled Dead Ringer this spring. On it, the husband and wife duo of Lauren Staley & Jason Morrow and bandmates have created an effort that builds on many of the sounds of their previous albums – incorporating deep country, Americana, honky-tonk, bluegrass and a stiff shot of gritty rock ’n’ roll.

David Lowery is a mathematician, writer, musician, producer and serial entrepreneur based in Richmond, VA and Athens, GA. While studying mathematics and computers in the early 1980s, Lowery founded the critically acclaimed ensemble Camper Van Beethoven and helped jump start the Indie Rock movement.  In 1991, Lowery moved on to the ensemble Cracker, which produced five, top ten alternative/rock radio tracks and three platinum albums. Lowery began teaching the economics and finance of the music business at the University of Georgia in 2011.  With a few like-minded entrepreneurs, he helped establish The Athens Angel Investment Fund. He is also on the board of the incubator 4 Athens.
