Children's Garden, at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia
- 2450 South Milledge Avenue, Athens, GA 30605
- (706) 542-1244
Opened in late March, 2019, the Children's Garden is the newest addition to the state of Georgia's official botanical garden. “The children’s garden is an exploration, a journey, not something you just walk through,” said Jenny Cruse-Sanders, director of the State Botanical Garden. “Everything is designed with attention to detail and an educational component.” The children's garden is free and open to the public and is an interactive outdoor classroom for hands-on education. Unlike any other in the Southeast, it is an experience crafted in layers, for children to explore under, around and through.
Update, Aug. 19, 2020: The Alice H. Richards Children’s Garden will be re-opening for play and exploration. To keep health and safety of everyone in mind you must pre-register for your 1.5 hours exploration day and time. Visitors will not be permitted into the space without a receipt which will be shown to staff at the entry gate with the larger than life shovel. Registrations must be made 24 hours in advance through the website.
Not offered at this time:
- Be sure to stop at the Visitors Center for a Garden Earth Explorers Passport, full of fun activities for the Children's Garden.
- Children will also enjoy the Garden Earth Explorers program, offered twice a week. An activity for children ages 3 to 6 takes places every Thursday at 10:15 a.m. Every Saturday at 10:15 a.m., there is a program for children ages 7 to 10.
- The Garden Earth Explorers is free and open to the public. No registration is required.
- There will be a sign at the Children’s Garden’s entrance to direct visitors each week. The program is sometimes cancelled due to the weather. For updates on rainy days, go to www.facebook.com/botgarden/?ref=br_rs.
