Ginkgo Meadow mosaic

Athens has long been charmed by its ginkgo trees. Over the last two years, seven Project Ginkgo mosaics ensured that the distinctive leaves beautify the west end of Downtown year-round. Local artist Krysia Ara continues the public art project, funded by the Athens Downtown Development Authority. She has completed the first 2020 installation, Ginkgo Meadow, in front of the Chamber of Commerce on Hancock Avenue. Its intricate tile and glass mosaics decorate an otherwise dreary concrete light pole base. Each unique leaf was created by pressing an actual ginkgo leaf into clay! Ginkgo Meadow honors the life of Commissioner Jerry NeSmith, who passed away in June 2020.
