Athens has long been charmed by its ginkgo trees. Project Ginkgo, a public art project funded by the Athens Downtown Development Authority, ensures that the distinctive leaves beautify Downtown year round. Local artist Krysia Ara's intricate tile and glass mosaics decorate otherwise dreary concrete light pole bases. Each unique leaf is created by pressing an actual ginkgo leaf into clay! As of mid-2022, Krysia has installed 17 (and counting!) mosaic creations to the project.
