The Place
- 229 East Broad Street, Athens, GA 30601
- (404) 815-9327
Joining Athens, Ga.’s diverse culinary landscape, The Place delivers on the town’s demand for refined Southern cuisine, classic cocktails and local craft brews. Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, The Place’s menu features modern variations on classic Southern dishes like Buttermilk Chicken and Shrimp & Grits. The Place is family-owned and operated by University of Georgia graduates Alan and Ryan Pope and is housed in a renovated space located across from The Arch in historic downtown Athens.
Menu items will include well-executed Southern classics, such as Braised Pork Shoulder with creamy mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables, and Red Snapper, lightly breaded and pan-fried over wilted greens with lemon, garlic and fresh parsley served with maque choux and Southern-style lima beans. Dinner entrees range from 12 to 25 dollars. Lunch entrees range from 8 to 10 dollars and include hand-pressed burgers and traditional “meat and three” platters. The Place’s full bar will offer simple, classic cocktails and 11 rotating tap handles of locally made and craft beers.
Although the downstairs dining room will serve as the main service area, the Pope Brothers have built out the property to include an intimate upstairs dining space with full bar that will stay open late. The restaurant’s interior features rustic wood elements complemented with traditional tile floors. Dubbed The Place after a car dealership owned by the duo’s grandfather, Ryan and Alan hope the restaurant serves as a relaxed gathering place for students and their families, university faculty and locals alike.
