This beautiful late Greek Revival home with Italianate influences was built circa 1850 and is the last remaining residence from Lickskillet, an affluent 19th-century neighborhood in downtown Athens. The Ware-Lyndon House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been fully restored as a house museum.
It is also part of the Athens African American Heritage Pathway, with a permanent interpretative exhibit, film and podcast detailing the stories of Ware-Lyndon House enslaved individuals and their descendants.
The house museum is the centerpiece of the Lyndon House Arts Center, so take time to walk through the impressive galleries displaying a wide range of local and regional art.
Outside of the house, there's a parterre garden inspired by the Upson-Howard Place located in Lexington, GA. Each corner of the garden is marked by a statue representing sculpture, music, architecture, or painting.
The Ware-Lyndon House is open for self-guided experience Tuesday–Saturday from 10 AM– 5 PM. Audio guides can be heard by scanning the QR codes posted on the walls throughout the house. All exhibitions and programs are free of charge and open to the public. Please enter and exit the building through the main Arts Center entrance near the parking lot. The front and side entrances of the Historic Ware-Lyndon House is always locked.
