Opened in 2012, the exhibit galleries of the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries bring Georgia's history to life and this attraction is a must see for any visitor to Athens. Located on the campus of the University of Georgia, the building is home to three archives: the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies, and the Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection. These libraries acquire, organize, preserve, and provide access to unique and rare materials related to the history and culture of Georgia.

The second floor of the building has dedicated gallery space with rotating exhibits showcasing materials from each library's collections. Items on display often include rare books, manuscripts, photographs, correspondence, vintage radio and microphones, political cartoons, and other original materials. Many of the exhibits also offer interactive kiosks displaying content drawn from audiovisual and oral history collections. The second floor also houses event spaces used to host lectures, film screenings, performances and other public programming. The third floor houses the building's reference area and reading rooms where researchers can request and review materials from the collections.

HOURS

The building is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. The building is closed on University holidays, and on Saturdays when there are UGA home football games. Those dates for the 2015 season are: September 5th, 19th and 26th, October 3rd and 17th, and November 7th and 21st.
