Walk across Broad Street in downtown Athens through the landmark Arch onto the original campus of the nation's first state-chartered university. Greek Revivial architecture, beautiful gardens, and stately trees frame historically significant buildings such as the Chapel. Home to George Cook's painting of St. Peter's Cathedral, the 17 by 23 foot painting was thought to be the largest framed oil painting in the world at the time of its completion. The self-guided tour and guided tours are available through the UGA Visitors Center. NEWS FLASH, July 30, 2009: Remnants of a former building and artifacts dating back more than 200 years have been uncovered beneath the foundations of New College on the University of Georgia's North Campus, allowing a glimpse into a long-lost chapter of UGA history.
