International Waffle Day (not to be confused with National Waffle Day, which falls on August 24th) is TOMORROW! Lucky for you, there are an abundance of Athens establishments at which you can celebrate. In fact, we did a bunch of research on where exactly you should look for a fantastic waffle in Athens, presented here for your convenience.
Bruxie
If you’re looking for variety, Bruxie is definitely the place for you. As a restaurant dedicated specifically to chicken and waffle plates, they have so many waffle variations that it would take you 10+ trips to try them all.
A fan of the classics? Try the basic chicken and waffles plate! Or, try a chicken and waffle SANDWICH (regular or spicy!) for an innovative twist on the chicken/waffle paradigm.
On the prowl for a little treat? Bruxie’s got you covered with non-savory options as well. Try a waffle plate piled high with whipped cream and strawberries, or order a sweet waffle sandwich filled with lemon cream and berries. You can also keep it simple and order just a plain waffle for a truly “back to basics” Waffle Day experience.
And that’s just the regular menu! The Bruxie gameday menu steps it up with a bacon, egg, and cheddar waffle sandwich. What more could anyone want?
The Place
Just a few steps away from Bruxie, you’ll find The Place! Known for its modern twist on classic Southern dining, The Place is your destination for a classy, refined Waffle Day.
For dinner, get your sweet belgian waffle and buttermilk chicken topped with tabasco candied bacon, blueberry sauce, and salted caramel. To complete the Southern breakfast-for-dinner experience, this dish comes with a side of gouda grits (yum!).
For Sunday brunch, your chicken and waffles come with blueberry sauce and powdered sugar - plus a side of fresh fruit (and a mimosa if you’re feeling it). The chicken and waffle plate is ALSO offered for lunchtime (with blueberry sauce and your choice of side). We’re already drooling.
The World Famous
The World Famous is the last stop on our Waffle Day list! Here, they keep it simple with a “food cart” dining style (no utensils needed!), giving you a no-fuss Waffle Day.
The World Famous only has one waffle option, but it’s a waffle you won’t want to miss out on. Their chicken and waffle club sandwich pairs fried chicken with lettuce, tomato, and tasty bourbon maple butter. In classic club sandwich fashion, this dish is served with chips or fries - your pick.
As an added bonus, The World Famous also serves as an intimate music venue, which means (depending on the day) you get to enjoy waffles AND a show! Truly a memorable waffle experience….
Bonus: French Toast!
Craving a carb-laden breakfast treat but not in the mood for waffles? Can’t relate, but Athens has got you covered! Here are just a few of our favorite French toast plates around town:
-
The Georgia Peach French Toast at Mama’s Boy is not to be missed. Topped with peach slices, candied pecans, and whipped cream, this French toast plate is perfect for any sweet tooth. (This menu item is not available at the Wire Park location in Watkinsville).
-
Big City Bread Cafe ALSO offers a tasty French toast plate on their brunch menu. Cooked with orange zest and topped with powdered sugar, this dish is sure to be a great start to any day.
- Still looking for the perfect French toast plate? Head to brunch at South Kitchen & Bar! This French toast is served with berry compote, syrup, powdered sugar, whipped cream, AND a side of fruit, and we can’t recommend it enough.
While we hope you try one (or all?) of these restaurants on International Waffle Day, waffles are ALWAYS appropriate - 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Next time you’re craving a waffle in the Classic City, you know where to go!
