Halloween is almost here and Athens, Georgia is already buzzing with excitement and anticipation leading up to one of the town’s most-celebrated holidays! Whether you want to take a ghost tour, have family-friendly fun at a corn maze, or march in the Wild Rumpus Parade and Spectacle, the Classic City will make sure you spend the Halloween season right! Athens is indeed the best Georgia getaway for Halloween. Plus, the entire month of October is full of events and festivities taking place before Halloween, so you will not want to wait until the last day to break out your costume and let loose!
Athens Corn Maze
Once again, for the months of September and October, the 5-acre Athens Corn Maze is open and includes many family favorite fall/Halloween festivities. Located only five miles from the UGA campus and one mile from Georgia Square Mall, the Athens Corn Maze is country fun that's close enough to appreciate without having to go too far. Contrary to its name, the corn maze is more than just that. In addition to the Corn Maze, families can enjoy a "Hey Hey Heyride," pony rides, and plenty of farm animals to play with. There's also the Corn Box filled with freshly shelled corn, which offers a seasonal alternative to a sandbox for children (or adults!) to play in. Open Fridays through Sundays, admission only $10, and free for children under the age of 3, you will be sure to get your money’s worth while having fun with the whole family.
If you are looking for another corn maze option, Washington Farms is home to the iconic corn maze with the Georgia “G” written in the middle as well as “Go Dawgs” written on the outer edge. In addition to the the maze, Washington Farms offers a pumpkin patch where you can select your own pumpkins, the eerie opportunity to take a flashlight run through the maze after dark, an abundance of fall farm activities such as pig racing and a petting zoo, and guilt free access to yummy treats from their concession stand like their crowd favorite kettle corn. Located in the Watkinsville-Athens area, Washington Farms is equipped to service any of you or your family's fall wishes all in one place. Admission onto the farm is $14 for adults and prices drop depending on children’s age. So, make sure you take advantage of everything this place has to offer before the season is over!
Zombie Farms serves as yet another great and scary Athens Halloween attraction, one not for the faint of heart! Athens Zombie Tours will be open for the 2015 haunt season with a haunted walking trail through the woods and other activities like storytelling and marshmallow roasting. This October event is an unique alternative to all the kiddie corn mazes and predictable haunted houses because of their out-of-the-box theme, The Masque of the Red Death, and their pledge to make sure you have a scary good time. As for those who have seen the Zombie Bus driving through the streets of Athens, this is your opportunity to see for yourself what all the fuss is about! Zombie Farms is perfect for big groups and parties, so bring all of your friends and be prepared to be scared! Zombie Farms is open Fridays and Saturdays in the month of October from 8 PM to 11:30 PM and admission to the farm is $20.
Wild Rumpus Parade and Spectacle
Halloween in Athens would not be complete without The Wild Rumpus Parade & Spectacle. The Wild Rumpus is constructed in the spirit of Burning Man and the Oregon Country Fair and never fails to disappoint any of its spectators! This year, the Monster Mash Kid’s Halloween Party for families will be held the night before on Friday, October 30th at The Foundry from 12 to 3 PM, with the main event on the following day starting at 8:30 PM. The parade marches through the historic downtown district with an outdoor stage show with the Rumpus Band, followed by an outrageously fun after party at Nowhere Bar. Wild Rumpus gives all of its attendees the opportunity be in the parade by dressing up in their own individual costumes or they can join a themed brigade of costumes such as Star Wars, Disney, Zombies, etc. Whether you want to dress up and be in the parade or enjoy watching from the sidewalks, The Wild Rumpus sets out to amplify the massive display of creativity while supporting their self-expression in an inviting, safe environment.
Haunted Happy Hour Tour
Classic City Tours has announced its Haunted Happy Hour Tour will be offered for the second time this fall season! Each downtown Athens ghost tour stroll will reveal the backstories of Athens’ better known landmarks and little known lore of its people and places. Ever wonder which historic downtown buildings have ghost stories? Wonder no more, as each ghost tour explores the spooks, specters, and other oddities of the Classic City. Wear comfortable walking shoes because this tour will last about 90 minutes and will promptly depart rain or shine! The tour will take place on Thursdays in October from 5:30 to 7 PM and will conclude at the Creature Comforts Brewery, just in time to take a tasting and brewery tour of one of Athens most successful downtown breweries. Make sure to get the most of this wonderful fall weather by taking the Haunted Happy Hour Tour and learning more about Athens quirky history. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
For one night only, the Rose of Athens Theatre will be putting on the spooky classic, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, at the Seney Stovall Chapel on October 24th. The storybook tale revolves around the main characters- the bumbling, awkward schoolteacher, Ichabod, the coquettish Katrina and Ichabod's brutish rival, Brom Bones. As much fun as the play presents, it saves the best for last- the ride of the headless horseman.
