The BikeAthens website is a great resource for local and visiting cyclists and includes a cycling events calendar and opportunities to meet up with other cyclists.
BikeAthens holds group Joy Rides the LAST Friday of each month.
Joy Rides are casual, 6 to 8 mile rides that last about 90 minutes and finish with an optional social gathering downtown or at the BikeAthens shop. The rides start at 6:00 pm at the BikeAthens shop at 1190 Prince Ave Suite B (under Daily Grocery).
Bring water, a helmet, and bike lights. It is also nice to have a spare innertube that fits your bike.
The rides abide by all applicable traffic laws and re-group at safe stops as needed during the ride. Nobody is left behind! All rides include a ride leader who regulates pace and a sweeper to handle mechanical problems if they arise. Get in touch if you would like to know the route ahead of the ride.
BikeAthens and the UGA Community Mapping Lab have created an interactive map of preferred biking routes in Athens Georgia in Athens. In addition to suggesting the best streets for bike riders, it also marks areas with steep inclines, transit stops, and local amenities. The map rates roads in four categories: Strongly preferred, Preferred, Use with caution, and Use only when necessary.
The mission of BikeAthens is to promote walking, cycling, and public transit as solutions to transportation needs in Athens through education, advocacy, and community service.
